RE and Collective Worship
St Werburgh’s Primary School is privileged to have children and families of many different faiths. In line with our Rights Respecting Ethos, children have the right to celebrate and practise their religion. In our RE curriculum, we teach children to develop their understanding of many different religious beliefs from around the world. We use the Discovery Scheme to teach our RE.
Our school explores a rich variety of religious beliefs in our Collective Worship time. We have 4 assemblies a week, as well as a class assembly on the 5th day, and in these collective learning times, children are taught and reflect on religious festivals and beliefs; this include religions both on the primary curriculum and those that are not. The Education Act of 1996 requires the syllabus to reflect that the main religious traditions of Great Britain are Christian whilst taking into account the teachings and practices of the other principle religions represented in the UK. In Key Stage 1, the curriculum requires children to learn about Christianity and one other religion; for our school, this religion is Islam. In Key Stage 2, the curriculum requires children to learn about Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Hinduism.
Our RE curriculum should enable all young people to become:
- successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve;
- confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives;
- responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society.
