We Are Musicians

Music is the study of creative expression through sound.

At St Werburgh’s Primary, we learn about music through singing, listening, playing, composing and performing.

We are becoming musicians by deepening our understanding of:

pitch, duration, rhythm and pulse, tempo and dynamics, timbre, texture and structure.

It all starts with singing. Key Stages 1 and 2 have a weekly Singing Assembly and can join after-school Choir Clubs.

Listening to a wide variety of genres, key pieces, live music and each other performing is a core part of our curriculum.

Whole-class instrument tuition gives our children the experience of playing as part of an ensemble:

Reception: Boomwhackers

Years 1 and 2: Ukulele

Years 3 and 4: Glockenspiel

Year 5: Steel pans

Year 6: Keyboard

Children in Key Stage 2 can have individual and small-group instrument lessons in piano, violin, guitar, flute and saxophone.

Composition skills are developed from Reception to Year 6.

Performance is at the heart of Music at St Werburgh’s Primary.

This includes solo instrumentalists, class ensembles and plays, choir and instrument workshops, carol concerts in our local church as well as multi-school events in Bristol Beacon and Bristol Cathedral.

We aim for all of our children to become confident, committed and curious young musicians.
