Promoting British Values
At St Werburgh’s Primary School, we promote fundamental ‘British values’ through our school values and ethos, the curriculum, our rules and through our work as a UNICEF Rights Respecting School.
Democracy
UNCRC Article 12 Every child has the right to be heard
Article 2 Every child has the right to be treated equally and with respect
Democracy is taught in our curriculum as well as through assemblies and in the election of our Rights Respecting Leaders who form the school council. Children have many opportunities for their voices to be heard and we prioritise relationships and children feeling clear that their ideas and suggestions will be listened to. We also use regular questionnaires.
The Rule of Law
UNCRC Article 19 Every child has the right to be protected from harm
Article 2 Every child has the right to be treated equally and with respect
Article 29 Every child has the right to an education
The rule of law is taught through our behaviour curriculum and the desire to develop character and responsible citizens. Our behaviour curriculum sets out exactly what we mean by our rules to be respectful, responsible and safe and this is reinforce throughout the school day. Our family/school agreement sets out the contract between the school, children and their parents and carers.
Individual Liberty
UNCRC Article 19 Every child has the right to be protected from harm
Article 12 Every child has the right to be heard
Article 2 Every child has the right to be treated equally and with respect
We work hard to instil an appreciation of the rights of children and of others. We actively encourage children to make choices, through provision of a safe environment and an empowering education which encourages children to be positive changemakers. Children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safely; for example in computing through our work on online safety.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance
UNCRC Article 2 Every child has the right to be treated equally and with respect
Article 29 Every child has the right to an education
Article 14 Every child has the right to practice their own religion
Article 30 Every child has the right to practice their own culture
We actively teach respect and the valuing and celebration of difference from the moment children start with us in Reception. This is through our curriculum, the way we teach and manage behaviour and the way that we all interact with each other. We value kindness and do all we can to promote this. When things go wrong we encourage reflection and resolution with empathy. We learn about and make links between all major world religions through our curriculum, assemblies and class discussions. We pride ourselves on the importance we place on being proud of ones’ heritage and the value of feeling a sense of belonging as part of our school community, ‘together towards excellence’.
